This iconic sandstone formation known as "the wave" is located on the slopes of Coyote Buttes near Page, Arizona. The undulating rock patterns are the remnants of Jurassic sand dunes shaped by strong winds millions of years ago. Over time, the layers upon layers of sand became cemented and deformed, slowly revealed by erosion. To protect the delicate geology, permits to hike here are among the most difficult to get in the country.
